Maternity is undoubtedly a period at which suits quite a few women so much that they look at their best. Yet, strangely, most women do not seem to feel so! The very changes that make a woman so beautiful are also sometimes quite irritating to them. I’ve had occasion to interact with many an expecting woman and ill-fitting clothes are among the top 3 pet peeves of that phase.

As the fetus grows, the mother-to-be finds that almost instantly on becoming pregnant, all of her clothes suddenly don’t fit her. She needs a new wardrobe. Unfortunately, she needs a new wardrobe every two weeks or so. This situation becomes even more irritating when it comes to nightwear. At the end of yet a tiring day, the expectant mother cannot be expected to deal with tight-fitting clothes. Nightwear during maternity has to be close-fitting but not tight-fitting. It should also be able to handle some of the inevitable increase in size, thus allowing an expecting mother to use the maternity nightwear a little longer, and so allowing her to put off buying another set for that much longer. Further, maternity clothing should allow for those incessant calls of Nature.

Manufacturers of maternity nightwear produce these items of clothing in many fabrics, designs, and colors. The most comfortable fabrics are those that allow the skin to breathe and thus reduce the amount of irritation felt due to textile-to-skin contact. Cotton is one of those fabrics that allow the skin to breathe. The most comfortable textile product using cotton is t-shirt material produced using a unique weave known as the “Jersey Stitch”. It is this method of weaving which gives the fabric its very soft and stretchable nature. This nature allows clothes made from this fabric, such as t-shirts – to be close-fitting yet comfortable and which also can adjust to a lot of variation in size. For these reasons, it is well-suited to be used to make maternity nightwear.
Modern technology allows production of different new types of synthetic textile fibers with special characteristics. One such fiber is called Spandex (developed by researchers at Dupont Inc, USA) or Lycra which is very stretchable. When released, Spandex fibers return to their original shape. So these fibers are mixed in small quantities with other fibers such as cotton to create clothing such as sportswear and maternity nightwear which can fit the curves of the body without being constrictive. Being stretchable, they allow for a high degree of movement. The abrasion of fabric over skin is minimized because the fabric hugs the body and so does not move much over the skin. This is a relief to many expectant mothers who suffer from heightened skin sensitivity during pregnancy. In fact, maternity nightwear made of Spandex enhanced cotton fabric, for example, helps reduce the abrasion of skin over skin as well. This reduces irritation and itching, especially in hard-to-reach areas.
With just a little care, it is easy for expectant mothers and fathers to choose the right maternity nightwear. This will ensure the best preventive medicine known to humans – a good night’s sleep. Comfortable maternity nightwear ensures that no matter what today took out of you, you’ll always be ready come tomorrow morning.
